Question settings

Click a question to edit it. Changes save as you go, to the draft; respondents see them once you publish.

  • Question: the title respondents see.
  • Short name: the column header in responses and exports, not shown on the form. Worth setting for long questions, up to 60 characters.
  • Required: the form can’t be submitted without an answer.
  • Under Description & help text: a Description shown under the question and above the answer (bold, italics and links), Help text shown under the answer, and a Placeholder inside the input (Text Input, Website, and Multiple Choice as a dropdown).

The ⋮ menu on a question can Duplicate or Delete it. Deleting a question that a condition, calculation or workflow uses tells you what will stop working first.

Drag a question onto another one’s row to put them side by side, two or three in a row. On a phone, they stack.

Under Show this field:

  • Always (the default).
  • Only when conditions match: build rules on earlier answers, like Country equals Netherlands. See Logic and pages.
  • Never: hidden field: not shown to respondents, but saved with the response. Its value comes from the link (below). Use it for a source, a campaign or a reference.

Under Advanced, give a question a Field key, like ref or utm_source. A link ending in ?ref=newsletter then fills that question in. Respondents can still change a visible prefilled answer; a hidden one goes straight into the response. Keys use letters, numbers, _ and -, and are case-sensitive. Prefill works best for typed answers (text, email, numbers); a Calculated question can’t be prefilled.

A Multiple Choice question takes the option’s label: ?plan=Pro picks the option called “Pro”, whatever its capitals or spacing. A value that matches no option leaves the question empty.

Anyone can edit a link, so a prefilled value is whatever the person who opens it sends. That’s why a hidden field can’t set a price: a form whose calculated payment uses one won’t publish. Make that question visible, or use a fixed amount.

A question’s title, description and help text, and Content blocks, can include an answer given earlier in the form, like “Thanks, Anna. Which plan suits you?”. Type @ (or click the @ in the field) and pick the question. The answer shows as the respondent gives it, blank until then. Only questions that come earlier in the form can be used.
